This week, Facebook unfriended the country of Australia (Crikey!), Punctuation Twitter takes off, McDonald’s goes posh, Chips get Baconatored, and new emojis are coming in hot. So get that Quarter with Cheese, fire up your new emojis, throw another social media battle on the barbie, and let’s get on with the show.
1. Facebook vs. Australia
This week, social giant Facebook cut off news-sharing in Australia in response to a new proposed law that would force platforms to pay news publishers. While Google has announced an agreement to pay in this new system, Facebook simply blocked users from viewing or sharing news. Facebook says, “The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content.“ Will this nuclear gamble or doomsday unfriending pay off? Or will Australian Facebook be the best version of it. No news, lots of kangaroo memes?

2. Punctuation Twitter
So nearly 350,000 people have liked and almost 50,000 have retweeted this distracted boyfriend meme about punctuation. We did not expect punctuation memes to be a thing on our 2021 bingo cards. Take a few minutes and dive into those comments to find all caps defenses of Octothorpes and even the usual em-dash vs. en-dash people which closely resembles the battle between Vampires and Werewolves from Underworld.

3. McDonald’s is posh now?
Maybe it’s the 11th month of the pandemic talking, but these new delivery focused posters for McDonald’s in London are quite stunning. The art direction shows a lovely range of buildings with the Golden arches landing inside and lighting up a room. And I want my Quarter Cheese and nuggets to arrive right now. Especially given they also have some new packaging and are getting ready to drop their chicken sandwich.

4. Chip Flavour Science
If you thought we wouldn’t be discussing the new Pringles flavour this week, then you don’t know Weekly Wins content. The new Baconator flavour, from the iconic burger from Wendy’s, promises that a “chip tastes like a half-pound of hot n’ juicy beef, melted cheese, 6 slices of crispy Applewood smoked bacon, ketchup, and mayo.” That’s science we can get behind. Also, that Wendy/Pringle logo is fire.

5. New Emojis Incoming
The latest version of iOS (14.5 beta) has brought forth a bunch of new emojis. The new release includes heart on fire and mending heart, vaccine-friendly syringe (ie: no more blood), plus a few new smiley ones with exhaling face, face with spiral eyes, and our personal favourite: face in the clouds. The new release also includes new options for gender consistency as well as a bunch of new inclusive couples.
